8 dead in Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway auto crash

No fewer than eight persons died on Monday, August 10, in a multiple accident at the Onipepeye end of the Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state.accident

The accident, which was said to have occurred at about 1p.m., involved an Abeokuta-bound Mercedes Benz Jeep 500 ML with registration number Lagos KRD 933 BC and two fully loaded passenger buses marked Ogun XC 878 JBD and Ogun SRA 229 XA.

An eye witness, who identified himself simply as Tee Money, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the jeep veered off its lane and rammed into an oncoming vehicle.

He explained that the drivers of the jeep and one of buses with six passengers including a student identified as Adekoya Emmanuel died on the spot.

The witness claimed that he saw the second bus when it rammed into the two vehicles.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident.

Akinbiyi, who could only confirm the death of two people, said that 12 out of the critically injured passengers were taken to a private hospital in the Panseke area of Abeokuta.

He said four others, including a seven- year-old girl, were taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye for treatment.

The spokesman also disclosed that N150, 000 was recovered from the scene of the crash while the corpses of those who died had been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital inIjaye.
