The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) has announced the appointment of Thomas Piland as its new Chief Communications Officer. Piland, who previously served as the Director of Communications for a large school district in California, brings over a decade of experience in education communications and public relations.
In his new role, Piland will be responsible for overseeing the district’s communication strategies, enhancing community engagement, and ensuring transparency in district operations. His extensive background in media relations and community outreach is expected to bolster the district’s efforts in fostering strong connections with families and stakeholders.
Piland expressed enthusiasm about joining SMMUSD, stating, ‘I am honored to be part of such a vibrant community dedicated to student success.’ He emphasized the importance of clear communication in building trust and collaboration among educators, parents, and the community.
The district’s Superintendent, Dr. Ben Drati, highlighted Piland’s proven track record in improving communication efforts in his previous positions, saying, ‘We are excited to welcome Thomas to our team, and we believe his skills will greatly benefit our district as we continue to enhance our communication with all stakeholders.’
Piland will officially start his position on as soon as possible, and he is expected to lead various initiatives aimed at improving the district’s outreach and engagement strategies.
