In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing war between Iran and the U.S.–Israel coalition, a massive underground military complex linked to Ali Khamenei, Iran’s slain supreme leader, has been destroyed in a large-scale airstrike in Tehran, according to Israeli military officials.
The underground “missile city”
The facility was part of Iran’s network of secret subterranean bases—often called “missile cities”—designed to store ballistic missiles and allow Iran’s leadership to command military operations safely during wartime.
The particular bunker targeted was located beneath Iran’s leadership compound in central Tehran and stretched under multiple streets, containing meeting rooms, entrances, and command facilities for senior officials.
Khamenei’s use of the bunker
According to Israeli statements, the bunker had been constructed as a secure emergency command center intended for use by Khamenei during a major conflict.
However, Khamenei himself was reportedly killed earlier in the war during a separate strike before he could take refuge in the underground complex.
Even after his death, intelligence indicated that senior Iranian officers and officials continued using the underground facility to coordinate military operations against Israel and U.S. forces.
The bombing
On Friday, roughly 50 Israeli Air Force fighter jets carried out a coordinated attack on the bunker.
Around 100 bombs were dropped on the underground complex.
The strike targeted multiple entrances and structural points.
The goal was to collapse and destroy the entire subterranean command site.
Israeli military assessments say the bombardment completely obliterated the bunker, and some reports suggest senior Iranian officials may have been inside when it was destroyed, though independent confirmation from Iran has not yet been released.
