The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the recently concluded general election, Peter Obi, has reiterated that the adequate financing of the education and health sectors will be instrumental in Nigeria achieving its desired economic development.
Obi stated this on Thursday during his visit to the Paul University campus in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
Obi asserted that the quality of education and healthcare is paramount for the nation’s growth, thus leaders should demonstrate their dedication to the enhancement of these sectors.
The previous Governor of Anambra State declared that, as a private citizen, he had been making it a practice to visit three healthcare facilities and three secondary schools on a monthly basis to provide them with whatever assistance he was able to.
Obi presented the University Management with a check in the amount of ten million naira as a token of his support, dated January 13, 2023; he did not make the presentation earlier in the month, as he wished to avoid any potential political implications.
“Politics is gone now; It is time for us to come and do what we want to do. We support education, and Paul University is one of those institutions that know what they are doing.
“I thought that government should have been supporting them. While I was in government, I remember giving the university about one hundred million nairas as support. But now that I am not there, I will do whatever I can from friends to raise money to support what they are doing.”
Obi reassured that he will continue to partner with the school and lend his support for the betterment of society.
Reacting, Paul University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Obiora Nwosu, commended Obi for the gesture and described him as a man well-known all over the world for his fairness and integrity.
