This is an open call to partner with your organization for the maiden edition of our flagship contest- “The Africa Wiki Challenge”(AWC), an initiative hosted by Open Foundation West Africa and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation.

The AWC is an annual online writing contest that calls on all Africans and Africans in the diaspora; students, editors, writers, librarians and anyone who has a passion for knowledge to contribute content on Wikipedia and its sister projects with the aim of bridging the digital content gap around Africa.

Each year the campaign will ride on a specific theme for content creation. That said, the theme for this year is Landmarks in Africa and it is aimed at documenting all landmarks, including but not limited to places of historical, cultural or national importance; monuments; important/key places such as districts, municipalities, regions, states, etc. on Wikipedia

As at 2016, only 2.6% of the 5million+ articles on wikipedia was about Africa (Guardian 2016). Additionally, studies indicate that 51% of the world today is on the internet yet the internet doesn’t represent diversity and some communities still remain marginalized and underrepresented. This challenge is aimed at increasing the visibility of the African continent on the web through wikipedia and its sister projects to improve the narrative and bridge the Africa content gap.

The purpose of this campaign will not be achieved in isolation, but with the support from your institution, we hope to work together towards a more diverse and inclusive experience on the internet for all.

Why Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is the world’s largest free online Encyclopedia and it is widely used all over the world. It is ranked among the top 5 most used websites in the world (the only non-profit among that list) and has over 20 billion visitors per month. It is a trusted source and a place that holds credible information for many. What makes the Encyclopedia unique is the opportunity it provides around online collaboration. Articles created on Wikipedia can be translated into numerous other languages including local African languages which increases its usefulness and usability by a variety of viewers. Because Wikipedia is highly indexed, information/articles created on Wikipedia pop up first or always show in the top three hits of all search results, irrespective of where you are in the world.

Leveraging the unique opportunity that Wikipedia provides, we hope to increase the visibility of locations, places and landmarks in Africa. This is especially important because in an era of information searchability via the web, it is key to strategically position information about the African continent on the web and take the opportunity to change the narrative while countering misinformation about the continent.

How can you support the campaign?

We want you to help us circulate this campaign within your network and on your media handles to encourage participation.

Duration of the writing contest: 25th May to 31st June
