Busisiwe Mkhwebane has come under-fire once more for finding in favour of two ANC stalwarts who have been accused of bad behaviour. Baleka Mbete and Faith Muthambi had both faced charges from the Public Protector’s office, but the investigations were both officially closed on Thursday.

The Public Protector was investigating bribery allegations against Mbete, whereas Muthambi was accused of breaching the Parliamentary Executive Code of Ethics. Despite existing incriminating evidence, neither politician has been found guilty of any wrongdoing:

“We have closed several investigations on the grounds that allegations that triggered them were all unsubstantiated. We have prepared closing reports to mark the end of these matters.”

“They involve allegations of improper receipt of a bribe by Ms. Baleka Mbete in the form of share allocation in Invictus Gold (Pty) Limited, and allegations of a breach of Executive Code of Ethics by former Minister of Communications, Ms. Faith Muthambi in connection with SABC inquiry. The reasons behind these closures will soon be made public.”

A bad year ends well for ANC duo

Baleka Mbete was recently a guest on Mehdi Hasan’s talk show on Al Jazeera, Head to Head. She did very little to adjust to the intense environment she was thrown in to, and thus fumbled a critical interview on the world stage. It’s something that can be judged as embarrassing for a figure of her stature – especially when she gave answers like these.

Earlier this year, Dr. Joe Thloloe, the chairperson of the Press Council commission of investigation into editorial interference at the SABC, said that the influence of the ANC “could be felt throughout the newsroom“, particularly when Faith Muthambi and Hlaudi Motsoeneng travelled to Durban in 2018 to support Jacob Zuma in his corruption case. She was also accused of bullying young journalists and forcing her opinions on editorial staff members.
