Rotimi Amaechi as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigerian Senate has confirmed former Rivers State Governor.
Amaechi was confirmed today, October 29, 2015, after the Senate rejected the report of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges on a petition filed against him.
The committee had earlier ruled that it could not stop Amaechi’s confirmation because the case against him was still being heard by a court.
The complaint had been filed by three Senators from Rivers citing the allegations of corruption leveled against the former governor.
Ekiti State Senator, Biodun Olujimi however tried to compel the Senate to consider the report against Amaechi saying that the petition was “a moral burden on the House.”
Committee Chairman, Sam Anyanwu also said that due to the report, the Senate had ‘no right to recommend confirmation.’
Meanwhile, some Senator-members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) begged to leave the Senate chamber while the proceedings were ongoing.
